West sends out first double

by Fleetwood Jones

TRAINER Sheena West sent out the first double of her career at sun-drenched Fontwell courtesy of Screenplay and Captain Cloudy - both ridden by Jamie Goldstein, who was recapturing the glory days of his Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup victory on King's Road in 2000.

Screenplay got home by three-quarters of a length in the two-and-a-half-mile novice hurdle in a tight finish from Hathlen and West said: "The horse makes it look such hard work in his races and at home, but his heart is in theright place. I think we will now go the handicap route with the gelding even though he will have a penalty."

Screenplay quickened up to lead three flights from home and then pulled out all the stops for Goldstein to repel the runner-up.

Of the second leg of her double, Captain Cloudy, West added that at first she felt a bit of a muppetwhen claiming him out of a race, but since then he has won three for her stable and was coming back to handicap company in the Class E hurdle. "I'mhoping they will put a bench for me here next to top track trainer Gary Moore's if I carry on like this," she laughed.

However, Moore, who had five runners at the meeting, was out of luck for a change at his favourite hunting ground. His SpidersWeb looked to have a good chance in the closing two-and-a-half-mile handicap hurdle but found Leopold, trained by Milton Harris four lengths too good after that one had led readily in the straight partnered by 7lb claimer Charlie Poste.

Brendan Powell kept up his productive run with Wembury Point in the opening juvenile hurdle. There were four horses in line halfway up the run-in but Powell's gelding, at 7-2 and ridden by Timmy Murphy, was pulled to the outside and won by a length-and-a-half going away from 11-4 favourite Compton Quay.

Pat Rodford collected the claiming hurdle with Outside Investor under Robert Thornton, who beat Red Nose Lady by a length-and-a-half. The winner came with a strong run 50 yards out to take the honours.

Chris Down has been hard at work finding races for Native Daisy who had been disappointing in her last two races for the Cullumpton trainer. Yet the mare, a 7-1 shot, coped admirably with the two-mile six furlongs of the handicap chase for James Davies and the pair were three-and-a-half lengths clear of Celtic Star at the post. "She will have a rest until about mid-October when there will be more events for her," said Down.

"I felt a bit of a muppet when I claimed him, thinking of his previous long losing run. But since then he has won three for me and I love him to death," West after Captain Cloudy's victory.
